JACKSON, MS (April 17, 2015) – As part of National Volunteer Week (April 12-18), established by the Points of Light Foundation in 1974, the American Cancer Society recently recognized its volunteers and highlighted the support of C Spire employees in its efforts to finish the fight against cancer.
Through its employee giving campaign, C Spire employees contributed $18,888 to the American Cancer Society in 2014, along with many hours of personal volunteer service. Their generosity helped patients receive rides to treatment, women battling cancer get a free wig or attend a Look Good Feel Better® session and for Mid-South residents to access cancer information specialists 24-hours a day, 7 days.
Combined with similar efforts around the county, the U.S. has experienced a 20 percent decline in cancer mortality rates over the last 25 years – saving 1.3 million lives and enriching family relationships.
“Our volunteers are saving lives every day by giving of their time, resources, talents and money to finish the fight against cancer.” said Michelle Hill, Senior Market Manager for the American Cancer Society. “Without the generosity of C Spire employees, the American Cancer Society in the Mid-South region would not have been able to make the strides in cancer breakthroughs and see the declining mortality rates that we have experienced. We still have much of the fight left and we are grateful for those who have stood alongside the Society and vowed not to back down until we eliminate cancer as a major health concern.”
